Lamp of the Week: 18" Peacock

The 18" Peacock is an elaborate Tiffany Studios' design that consists of overlapping peacock feathers swirling downwards across the surface of the shade. Horizontal border rows contain the feathers and give the design definition. This example features blue feathers tinged with purple blending through green, continuing to lighter reddish tones at the bottom. The shade is shown on the impressive Peacock base which continues the peacock feather design in bronze down to the table. Each feather on the base has a stained glass eyes at its center. This shade was created in 2005 and is in a private collection.

Lamp of the Week: 18" Trumpet Vine

The Trumpet Vine is one of the four Tiffany Studios 18" shade designs that have a cast bronze crown of openwork branches at the top which mates with the large Tree Trunk base. This shade mixes intensely colored orange/red/yellow flowers and lush foliage against a rich multicolored background. The irregular lower border emphasizes the naturalistic look of the lamp. Created in 2004, this lamp is in a private collection.

18" Oak Leaf

The 18" Oak Leaf is a generously proportioned 18" shade with a wide border of swirling leaves and acorns bookmarked between upper and lower sections of formal geometric glass tiles. The mottled celadon green glass sets off the amber acorns and green leaves tinged with red and brown. Easter Lily - Part 2

We have completed the 28" Easter Lily shade, which has been delivered to our clients in the Chicago area. This is our newest original Century Studios original lamp design. In our post from February 29th, we showed the progress of this lamp up to transferring the foiled pieces onto the form. Irwin then began the long process of soldering the shade.

After many hours, the exterior was completely soldered and the shade was ready to be removed from the form. The interior of the shade was then soldered and reinforcing wires were added to the inside of the shade for additional strength. Once the soldering was completed, a metal rim is added to the lower edge of the shade. In addition to providing a clean visual bottom edge, the rim adds stability to the shade. This shade then had a decorative bead chain soldered along the lower edge.

The construction complete, the shade was cleaned, plated and a verdigris patina was applied to the lead lines. 28" cone shaped shades are generally used as chandelier fixtures, but our client will be displaying this shade as a large table lamp. We are showing the shade on the Turtleback base.

The complexity and variety of the glass choices can be seen in the overhead view and detail shot of the completed shade. The full spectrum of art glasses were used in the creation of this piece including streaky, ring mottled, rippled, fibroid, and fracture/streamer. These glasses were expertly blended to create an Impressionistic view of a garden of lilies in full bloom.

Lamp of the Week: 22" Dragonfly

Due to their abstract design, dragonfly shades can be created in any color combination. The lively color palette of this dramatic 22" Dragonfly shade shifts from butter yellow to lavender/purple, which sets off the row of dragonflies at the bottom of the shade. The background of the shade is encrusted with light blue pressed glass jewels. This shade design is often referred to as the "Drophead Dragonfly" because the insects created the irregular lower border. Commissioned by an Ohio client in 2013, the shade is shown on the distinctive Twisted Vine base.

14" Turtleback

At Century Studios, we create turtleback shades in many shapes and sizes. For these shades, we hand cut and facet the individual turtleback tiles which makes the decorative band. Commissioned by a client in New York, this 14" Turtleback shade has a wide band of emerald green turtlebacks set into a two tone green background. The shade is shown on the Leaf & Bud Pottery base.

Lamp of the Week:

The 12" Dogwood shade is often created with light pink and white flowers. This deeply colored shade gives the impression of a dogwood at sunset. The red/purple confetti background glass was created in our studio and compliments the lavenders and rich tones of the flowers. The shade is shown on an unusual blown glass base, which was one of a pair that was custom made for our studio - the second base is available. The tall profile of the lamp gives the piece a striking profile. This lamp was created as a showroom piece in 2011 and is now in a private collection in Iowa.
