22" Trumpet Vine

Trumpet Vine flowers come in a variety of colors ranging from the familiar orange, to yellow, scarlet, pink and even lavender, making the plant a natural choice for stained glass. The 22" Trumpet Vine is a large, turban shaped shade that makes an impressive table lamp, chandelier or floor lamp.
Supported by thick, woody stems, the boldly colored flowers cavort across the surface of the shade. The flowers are a vibrant mix of mottled, streaky, and textured glasses from every glass manufacturer in the past 30 years. Heavily mottled green leaves add a sun dappled appearance to the sparkling blue and green fracture/streamer glass used in the background.
The shade is shown on the Twisted Vine base (26" tall with tall riser). The lamp was commissioned by a client in Texas.

Lamp of the Week: 22" Peony

The 22" Peony shade is one of Tiffany Studios most successful lamp designs. The expressively bold flowers are perfectly captured in full bloom, filling the shade while being barely contained by the horizontal border rows.
Blending together a delicious mix of colors, the flowers are a mix of fuchsia, red, and purple. Lush green foliage parts to reveal a  background in an impressionistic mix of deep blue and green, highlighted with amber, purple, red, and fuchsia. Textured glasses are used throughout the shade culminating in the heavily rippled border rows. We created this shade in 2018 for a client in Illinois. The shade is shown on the Twisted Vine base (26" tall with a large riser).

22" Poinsettia

The 22" Poinsettia shade showcases large expressive flowers blooming within a formal trellis. The tiered trellis creates windows through which the flowers expand. This shade design is often referred to as the Double Poinsettia.
Commissioned by a client in Arizona, this shade has a blended coloration where different colors with the same tone are used throughout. The result is when viewed from a distance the shade appears to be one tone, but when approached the individual colors begin to intensify and stand out from one another.
Set against a mottled celadon green background and a warm amber trellis, the flowers are a combination of complimentary orange tones. The orange is deceiving, because the flowers actually have been skillfully blended from glasses that include orange, amber, pink, red, and yellow.

Our client commissioned this shade to be used on an original Tiffany Studios lamp base in his collection. We are showing the shade on the Twisted Vine base (24.5" tall) and on a unique Monumental Pottery Leaf & Bud Urn base (29" tall). This one of a kind pottery base is currently available for purchase.

Lamp of the Week: 14" Chestnut

At Century Studios, we occasionally create original shade designs such as this 14" Chestnut pattern that was designed by Bill Campbell in 2011. This example, which was made in 2014 and is now in a private collection, has a vibrant blue sky tinged with purple and wisps of white, setting off the multi-toned green foliage and the pink/red/white flowers. The shade is shown on the Mushroom base.

18" Peacock on Peacock base

The 18" Peacock Lamp is the perfect marriage of shade and base. Tiffany Studios designed the impressive Peacock base (29.5" total lamp height) specifically for this shade, and the shape of the base mimics the bird's feathered breast. The shade consists of overlapping peacock tail feathers that playfully fan out across the surface of the shade.

To enhance the movement of the feathers, a finely textured, multicolored ripple glass was used throughout the shade. The deep red/purple glass at the top shifts into blue purple tinged with emerald green. Each feather is defined by the signature "eye". The lighter yellow and green tones at the bottom of the shade reflect the colors in the eyes.
The sturdy bronze Peacock base is decorated with highly detailed sculpted tail feathers. For the eyes on the base, stained glass is inset into the bronze. Since these eyes do not light up, we chose reflective lustre glasses which catch the light as the viewer approaches the lamp. This impressive lamp was commissioned by a local client.

Century Studios is open by appointment only for in studio visits. You can call us during regular business hours, or contact us by email at info@centurystudios.com with questions or inquiries.

Lamp of the Week: 14" Tulip

This 14" Tulip is a small shade with a large personality. The lively flowers and vivid leaves dance merrily across a field of multicolored blues in a burst of springtime merriment. The shade, shown on the Mushroom base, was created as a showroom piece in 2013 and is now in a private collection.

Lamp Bases

Our bronze foundry reopened last week, and we were able to pick up a number of lamp bases that were nearing completion at the time of the shutdown. We were also able to drop off waxes for upcoming orders. As discussed in our November 3, 2019 blog post (https://centurystudios.blogspot.com/2019/11/creating-century-studios-tiffany.html) we create each of Century Studios our bases using the lost wax casting method in bronze.

In the above photograph, we are showing the bases we picked up this week in several stages of completion. Lower right is the raw bronze casting for a Square Turtleback base - this is how the metalwork comes back to us from the foundry. Lower left is a Tall Flower Petal base that has had its spun copper body and light cluster completed and is now ready for patina. Back right is an Artichoke Trumpet that has its patina finished and is ready for wiring, and back left is a Peacock base that is fully finished.
The Artichoke Trumpet base was made for the 20" Waterlily shade we had in our showroom that was purchased by a client in Virginia. Here is the completed lamp.

Lamp of the Week: 20" Jonquil Daffodil

The 20" Jonquil Daffodil is one of the few Tiffany Studios lamp patterns that incorporates two varieties of the same flower on the same shade. The upper half of the shade features large daffodil flowers with their trumpets nodding gracefully. The lower half is scattered with a profusion of delicate Narcissus blooms whose bright faces are turned upwards towards the sun. For this shade, the sunny golden yellow daffodils and perky Narcissus flowers are a playful contrast to the lush greens and sparkling background glass. Commissioned in 2014 by a client in California, the shade is pictured on the Root base (This base is currently not available).

This Week At Century Studios

We are busy at the studio working on two large shades for different clients - a 22" Poinsettia and a 22" Trumpet Vine. The glass shown in the above is under consideration for the trumpet vine. The poinsettia is shown laid out on the light table before being transferred onto the form. Irwin has been soldering on the poinsettia this week and the shade is nearing completion, while Bill has been working on the trumpet vine layout.
One of the pleasures of having an open studio is that clients and interested visitors have been able to stop in and see us working on projects, view completed lamps for sale, and learn a bit about the process of creating a lamp. Unfortunately, with the current situation our door must remain locked to visitors, so here is a short clip of Bill cutting some pieces for the upcoming 22" Trumpet Vine shade.
