Lamp of the Week: 24" Snowball

The 24" Snowball shade is often mistakenly referred to as a hydrangea design - hydrangea flowers are conical while snowball flowers are round. Snowball bushes can reach heights and widths of 8 to 20 feet, and the large plant pictured is currently blooming in our yard. The flowers start out with green petals which turn white at full maturity. Flowers on Tiffany Lamps were rendered life sized making this large flowering bush a perfect subject for the generous proportions of a 24" shade.

The irregular lower edge gives this design the natural feel of a large specimen with branches bent by flower clusters in full bloom. A wide variety of glasses were used to create this shade. Vibrant greens play against white and off white flower clusters. Hints of blue and purple dot the sky visible through the dense foliage. We created this shade for our showroom in 2012. Shown on the Bamboo Senior Floor base, this lamp is in a private local collection.

Chrystler Museum

This past week, we visited the Chrystler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA. The museum has a lovely collection of works by Tiffany Studios. The museum lists 177 works by Tiffany, and most are on display. The majority of items by Tiffany Studios were donated by Walter Chrystler Jr., a longtime collector of paintings and decorative arts.

The galleries included the full spectrum of work created by Tiffany Studios, including lamps and several stunning windows. Also on display were many pieces of exceptional blown glass, metalwork, and architectural mosaic fragments.

Mr. Chrystler had a leaning towards Tiffany lamps that feature exceptional blue glass. Included in the display are an 18" Wisteria, 18" Flowering Lotus, and a stunning 22" Dragonfly.

Three Light Twist Lily Lamp -  This intertwining stems of this table lamp have a playful airiness. The gold lily shades provide a warm, soft light.

7" Geometric on Piano Lamp Base - This 7" Geometric lamp shades from light to deep lemon yellow. The heavily weighted base allows the shade to cantilever over the edge of an upright piano or book case, illuminating the area below.

Lamp of the Week: 16" Arrowhead

The 16" Arrowhead is a Century Studios variation on Tiffany Studios 14" Arrowhead shade. The lower portion of the original shade design curves back under itself, creating a compact shade. By flaring the shade into a straight sided cone, the design has more presence.

The arrowhead is a water plant which gets its name from the distinctive shape of the leaves. The mottled leaves are done in green with hints of blue and yellow, while the flowers are white with a blue tinge. The background and multiple border rows are shown in various shades of green which include mottled and textured glass.

This shade was commissioned by a local client in 2014 and is shown on the Mushroom base.

16" Fern

The 16" Fern is an early Tiffany Studios shade pattern that elegantly combines the naturalistic depiction of a plant form with a stylized graphic sensibility. With just under 1000 individual pieces of glass, this delicate design is highly detailed and boldly symmetrical. Commissioned by a local client, the light green ferns are set against an off-white background. The rippled upper border and geometric lower border give the design a peaceful balance. The shade is shown on the Leaf & Bud w/Collar pottery base.
