16" Geometric

Geometric shades work in any decor and can be created in a wide variety of glass colors. Blue and green mottled glass was chosen to enliven this 16" Geometric shade. Commissioned by a client in Tennessee, the shade is shown on the Tall Flower Petal base (20" tall).

Lamp of the Week: Oz Logo Lamp

Designed by Bill Campbell in the 1980's, our Oz Logo shade has long been a dormant Century Studios original lamp design. Bill adapted the logo design into a decorative band for this shade, adding a pressed glass "emerald" between each logo. After creating several examples in the late '80's/early 90's for Books of Wonder, a New York City bookseller, the design was quietly shelved until an Oz enthusiast in Massachusetts placed an order for this lamp in 2018. The shade is shown on the Small Stick base (20" tall). The Oz Logo shade can be made to order.

The Oz logo appears in an illustration at the end of The Marvelous Land of Oz, the 1904 book by L. Frank Baum. This was the second book in the Oz book series and the first title to be illustrated by artist John R. Neill. It is hard to see, but the scepter held by Princess Ozma contains the logo. In 1907 the third book in the series, Ozma of Oz, prominently features the logo front and center on the cover of the book. Neill continued to showcase the logo in illustrations on future stories of the series.

Bonus Lamp of the Week: 17" Bat Lamp

Tiffany Studios introduced the Bat Lamp around 1903 and only four original examples of this most unusual lamp are known. While Western culture often presents bats as harbingers of evil, Japanese culture associates bats with happiness, a long healthy life and wealth, and Native American Culture views bats in a spiritual light, symbolizing acute powers of perception, rebirth (emerging from and returning to their cave or womb nightly), and journeying.

The 17" Bat shade has three bats flying against a clear, starry night sky. The rich deep amber tones of the bats are set against a brilliant deep blue glass with hints of purple streaked throughout. The bodies of the bats are accentuated with cast bronze overlays. The unusual lobed shape of the shade adds visual interest.

The Bat Mosaic base was designed by Tiffany Studios specifically for this shade. The base is cast in bronze at our studio and is finished with hand applied glass mosaic.

Following the design of the shade, the base has three bats in flight at the against a glass mosaic sky. The glass mosaic in the base is cut and fit by hand using reflective blue lustre glass with a purple tinge in the iridized surface that perfectly compliments the sky glass used in the shade.

This Bat Lamp was created as a showroom lamp and is now in a private local collection.

Lamp of the Week: 16" Cyclamen

The 16" Cyclamen shade is a rarely seen Tiffany Studios lamp design. The distinctly shaped pink, white, and purple flowers float on delicate stems above a bed of lush green foliage. The flower stems are represented by the vertical lead lines, keeping the design light and airy. The shade is shown on the Greek Urn base. This lamp was created as a showroom piece in 2015 and is now in a private local collection.

10" Acorn Pair

Following closely on the heels of the pair of 16" Geranium shades we completed a few weeks ago is another pair of shades, a matching set of 10" Acorn shades. Commissioned by a client in California, the shades will be used with original Tiffany Studios harp lamps. One of the pair is shown on the delicate Dandelion base (12" height to the armset).

The glass chosen for the body of the shades is a richly mottled green with a touch of yellow mixed in. A lively yellow was selected for the acorns.

Lamp of the Week: 18" Alamander

The Alamander (also called Allamander and Allamanda) is a a large flowering shrub that is often found near streams and ponds. It is often called "Golden Trumpet" even though cultivated varieties can have yellow, white, or purple flowers.

For this 18" Alalamander shade, a variety of deep orange, amber and yellow flowers are contrasted against a backdrop of purple and blue that is tinged with yellow. The green leaves and stems enliven the rich tones of the background, playing off  the border rows at the top and bottom of the shade. The shade is shown on the stately Library base (22.5" tall). This lamp was created in 2019 as a showroom piece and is now in a private collection.

Pair of 16" Geranium Shades

We just completed a pair of 16" Geranium shades for a client in Canada. The client requested that the shades be a matching pair, but with the added twist that the shades be two sided.

One side of each shade has red as the predominant color. The flowers on this side range from lighter reds to deep black cherry. The background on this side of the shade is a transparent fracture/streamer glass, while the leaves are a mix of greens with a hint of red.

On the opposite side, the overall colors of the leaves and flowers lighten and brighten. The background shifts to a semi-transparent glass that is tinted with a light green tone and is streaked with fuchsia. The flowers on this side are a mix of fuchsia pinks.

The result is that our client can display the lamps with two lightly colors shades, a matched pair of deep toned lamps, or two 16" Geranium shades in complementary, but different color schemes. We are currently making a matched pair of Swamp Flower bases for these shades. The shades are shown above on the Tall Flower Petal (20" tall) and the Grooved base (24"tall).

Lamp of the Week: 26" Turtleback Chandelier

The 26" Turtleback shade is an impressive chandelier fixture. This massive shade perfectly conveys the impression of a large tortoise shell, inspiring the moniker for both the shade and the pressed glass tiles used to create it. Composed entirely of large turtleback tiles, the spaces between the tiles are filled in with hand cut turtleback pieces. This impressive chandelier fixture is as heavy as it looks, weighing in at just under 50lbs. Created as a showroom example in the early 2000's this fixture is now in the collection of a client in North Carolina.
