Lamp of the Week: 20" Dragonfly

The 20" Dragonfly shade, with its elegant shape and jeweled background is a highly versatile design that can be created in any color. The body of this shade begins with a strong green at the top which quickly blends into sunny yellow and again shifts to orange/amber. Flying in formation around the shade are seven red and purple dragonflies. Commissioned in 2015 by a client in Vermont, the shade is being used as a table lamp with the richly sculpted Cattail base.

22" Dragonfly

The 22" Dragonfly shade is one of Tiffany Studios most popular shade patterns. This pattern is often referred to as the Drophead Dragonfly shade because the undulating lower edge of the shade is formed by the flying insects. The surface of this generously proportioned shade is studded with pressed glass cabochon "jewels", further adding to the three dimensional quality of the piece.

The body of the shade is a mix of deep cobalt blue and brilliant green glass. The dragonfly wings are a blend of cobalt blue and yellow, with bodies in purple rippled glass. The pressed glass jewels in various colors were created by our studio in the 1990's using molds taken from original Tiffany jewels.

We recently completed this 22" Dragonfly lamp for a client in San Francisco and he chose the Perforated base (26" tall) to compliment the shade. We have been working on expanding the base options for larger shades, and when we completed the shade we had four large table lamp bases made up. In the above photo, the shade is shown on the Large Bamboo base (27" tall), The Arc base (26.5" tall), and the Large Tree Trunk base (28" tall).

Lamp of the Week: 20" Jonquil Daffodil

The 20" Jonquil Daffodil is one of the few Tiffany Studios lamp patterns that incorporates two varieties of flower on the same shade. The upper half of the shade features large yellow daffodil with their trumpets nodding gracefully while the lower half is scattered with a profusion of delicate Narcissus blooms whose bright faces are turned upwards towards the sun. The subtle blue of the background glass and the green border tones interact harmoniously with the flowers. Commissioned in 2013 by a client in New York, the shade is pictured on the Library base (base 24" tall).

20" Geometric Brickwork

The rich tones of this 20" Geometric Brickwork shade emanate the cozy warmth of glowing embers. The deep amber glass is tinged throughout with turquoise and rosy pink which enhances the warmth of the color. The shade is shown on the elegant Decorated Trumpet base (23.5" tall). This lamp was commissioned by a local client.

Lamp of the Week: 14" Tulip

Tiffany Studios designed tulip shades in a variety of sizes and shapes, and this 14" Tulip shade has the light, airy feel of a fresh Spring day. The tulips in this playful design are bursting with energy and movement. The crisp pink tulips rise up from lively green leaves to play against the fracture streamer sky glass. 14" shades are the perfect size for beside tables or as accent lamps in any room. Shown on the Penguin Foot base (17" overall lamp height), this lamp was created as a showroom example in 2019 and is now in a private local collection.

Three New Lamp Bases

After months of prep work, Century Studios is pleased to introduce three new lamp bases to our line of reproduction Tiffany metalwork. All three bases are for 22" to 25" shades. Including the Large Bamboo table base we introduced in December, we have doubled the number of table bases we offer for larger shades.

The Arc base (26.5" tall) is a light, airy lamp base with an elegant profile. Sometimes referred to as the Eiffel Tower base, this delicate casting works particularly well with 22" shades. With a tall riser, this base also works with 28" cone shaped shades.

The Tall Tree Trunk base (28" tall) is taller than the standard Tree Trunk base for 18" Wisteria-style lamps, making it a perfect choice for larger shades like the 22" Laburnum. This Tall Tree Trunk has six lights and a master on/off switch at the base of the stem. This sturdy lamp base is the tallest table base we offer.
The Perforated base (26" tall - the base can be taller when telescoped) is a classic Tiffany lamp base design that looks good with any larger shade. The design inspiration for this base is a pomegranate with the seeds shown on the shaft while the open fretwork at the bottom representing the seedless membrane interior of the fruit. This elegant base sits on four feet and telescopes.

Lamp of the Week: 14" Daffodil

Commissioned by a local client in 2014, this 14" Daffodil shade heralds the changing of the seasons. The springtime greens in the leaves are accented by the green ripple glass in the border rows. Sunny yellow flowers play against a light blue sky creating an overall light and airy tone to the shade. The shade is shown on the Mushroom base (16" tall).

This Week At The Studio

We began a highly productive week at the studio by receiving an eagerly anticipated shipment of glass from the Youghiogheny Opalescent Glass Company. The 80 sheets of glass we ordered were carefully packed in wooden crates at the factory and shipped by truck. Since our studio is storefront and does not have a loading dock, our glass shipments are always delivered to the sidewalk in front of the studio. Weighing in at over 400lbs each, the two crates were a bit too heavy for us to move into the studio unopened so we unpacked them on the sidewalk. Carrying each sheet into the studio, we stacked the glass around the showroom until the crates were emptied. Phase two involved viewing each sheet on our light tables before assimilating the glass into our glass storage racks which are sorted by color. Receiving glass is always an exhilarating experience that gets us excited to get to work on upcoming projects.

In addition to finishing several commissioned lamp bases and fixtures, we are also coming close to completing a 22" Dragonfly shade for a client. Irwin is shown soldering the interior of the shade which will be completed soon. Waiting in the wings, we have a large geometric shade foiled and ready for soldering once the dragonfly is completed.

Lamp of the Week: 18" Nasturtium

Nasturtiums come in a wide variety of colors, making this trailing plant a natural inspiration for a stained glass shade. Bursting with energy and showcasing glass from every major glass maker of the past 35 years, this 18" Nasturtium shade was carefully blended to change color depending on which side of the shade is viewed. Shown on the Small Stick base (20" tall), this lamp was created as a showroom piece in 2016 and is now in a private collection.

The flowers shift from lush reds to juicy oranges, then into sunny yellows and back to red. The leaves and background follow each color change in the flowers, enhancing the color flow across the shade. Mottled, streaky, rippled, and fracture/streamer glass were all joined together to create a whirlwind of delight. This style of coloration takes infinite patience and attention to detail so the blended shifts in color are natural and do not feel forced.
