Lamp of the Week: 24" Snowball

The 24" Snowball is the deepest Tiffany Studios shade design we offer. While the shade is occasionally used as a large table lamp, its generous proportions are best suited for use as a floor lamp or chandelier. The irregular lower edge accentuates the impression of a large specimen with its branches bent by the weight of flower clusters in full bloom. We created this 24" Snowball as a floor lamp for a local client in 2018. A wide variety of mottled, streaky, and textured glasses  with an emphasis on blue and white were used for the flowers. The clear blue sky at the top of the shade is reflected throughout the piece, appearing amid the flowers and leaves. To keep the overall tone of the lamp light and airy, the abundant foliage has a mix of lighter greens.

New Shade Design - 20" Zodiac

Century Studios is pleased to introduce a new shade design to our line of reproduction Tiffany lamps. The 20" Zodiac is a cone shaped shade that features the twelve signs of the zodiac. Zodiac symbols were a popular design element and adorned many items created by Tiffany Studios including mosaic panels, desk set items and lamps.

The twelve zodiac symbols are represented by a pierced brass filigree medallion. Additional decorative filigree medallions adorn the surface of the shade. Each section of the design has a large round turtleback tile along with several small half round jewels. The combination of jewels and filigree give the shade a unique three dimensional quality.

A harmonious selection of greens were carefully chosen for the border rows and background which accentuates the the light amber tones of the jewels and filigree elements. The shade is shown on the Twisted Vine base (25.5" tall). This lamp is in a private local collection.

Lamp of the Week: 18" Peony

The 18" Peony is one of the most popular Tiffany shade patterns we offer. The large flowers dramatically cover the surface of the turban shaped shade, while the multiple horizontal borders provide structure to the design. This cheerful shade has a wide ranging variety of pink flowers set against a lively blue background. This lamp was commissioned in 2018 by a client in Georgia and is shown on the elegant Library base (23/5" tall).

Chain Mail Lantern

One of Tiffany Studios most unique lighting concepts is the Chain Mail Lantern. Moorish in inspiration, a large reticulated onion dome cap supports a flowing curtain of glass.

Constructed completely by hand, each piece of glass is encased in a metal framework and each unit is joined to the others by small loops in a process we refer to as weaving with metal and glass. The result is a glass chandelier that is both open and airy. Chain Mail Lanterns can be made with any color of glass and for this piece we chose a gold lustre sheet glass.

When the fixture is unlit, the glass surface picks up the reflected light and shimmers. The lantern itself is 9" wide and 18" tall (top of loop to bottom of curtain). With a ceiling canopy, the shortest length for the entire fixture is 25" when made without chain. With the addition of chain as shown in the top photo, the fixture can be made to any desired length.

This Chain Mail Lantern is currently available for purchase from our studio showroom.

Lamp of the Week: 12" Apple Blossom

Tiffany Studios created apple blossom shades in many shapes and sizes. The turban shape of this 12" Apple Blossom shade enhances the flow of the flowering branches. The shade is shown on the Torpedo base (18" total lamp height). This lamp was commissioned in 2021 by a client in South Carolina.

Multiple Projects at the Studio

As often happens in the studio, we have been working on multiple overlapping projects over the past few weeks.

While Irwin Terry was busy cutting geometric shades, Bill Campbell worked on painstakingly cutting and fitting the the glass mosaic on two lamp bases. The completed bases are shown below.

As Bill finished applying and grouting the glass mosaic, Irwin took each base to be assembled and wired.

Both of us have been working on foiling the larger of the two geometric lamps.

While working on these projects, we were also engaged in preparing waxes to take to the foundry. These waxes will be dropped off when we will pick up the raw bronze lamp base castings that will be completed in the coming weeks as we also continue to work the lamps shown above.

15" Spider

The 15" Spider is an expressive Tiffany lamp pattern. Three dimensional cast bronze spider legs rest atop the webbed geometric shade. For this shade the glass color starts dark green at the top and shifts down to pale green. The spider shade is traditionally shown on the Mushroom base, but here it is pictured on the Swamp Flower base (17" tall). This shade was commissioned by a client in Texas.
