16" Oz Logo Lamp

Designed by Bill Campbell in the 1980's, our Oz Logo shade has long been a dormant Century Studios original lamp design. We created several of these lamps for Books of Wonder, a New York City bookseller and then the design was quietly shelved until recently, when the lamp was commissioned by a client in Massachusetts.

The Oz logo appears in an illustration at the end of The Marvelous Land of Oz, the 1904 book by L. Frank Baum. This was the second book in the Oz book series and the first title to be illustrated by artist John R. Neill. It is hard to see, but the scepter held by Princess Ozma contains the logo. In 1907 the third book in the series, Ozma of Oz, features the logo front and center and Neill continued to showcase the logo in illustrations on future stories of the series.

Bill adapted the design as a decorative band for this shade, adding a pressed glass "emerald" between each logo.  The shade is shown on the Small Stick base (20" tall).

Lamp of the Week: 17" Bat

The 17" Bat is one of the more unusual Tiffany Studios shade designs. There are three known original Tiffany Studios examples of the shade with a trio of bats flying against a night sky, and only one known example of this variation with six overlapping bats. At Century Studios, we offer both versions of this unique design. Each bat is defined by a three dimensional cast bronze head and body. Commissioned in 2015 by a client in North Carolina, the shade is shown on the Dragonfly Stemmed Mosaic base.

22" Dragonfly

Three different glasses were used to make the dramatic color shift on this 22" Dragonfly. Beginning at the top with a sunny yellow, the color begins to deepen in the middle before the final shift to deep blue/purple at the bottom. With their outstretched wings, the orange bodied dragonflies overlap one another to form the irregular lower edge of the shade. The shade is encrusted with 144 pressed glass blue jewels which create a sparkling raindrop effect. Shown on the telescoping Perforated base (27" tall to the top of the shade, the Pigtail cap adds additional overall height to the lamp), this striking lamp was commissioned by a client in California.

Lamp of the Week: 12" Apple Blossom

We created this 12" Apple Blossom shade in the mid-1990's as a showroom piece. Set against a blue fracture/streamer sky, the pink and off white flowers commingle with delicately colored leaves in various shades of green. Supporting the shade is the Torpedo base, a stylized design that combines organic and industrial sensibilities. This lamp is in a private collection.

Woodbine on Flower Petal Base

We recently made up several lamp bases. The first is a Flower Petal base in a rich brown patina. The style and shape of this base works particularly well with the 16" Woodbine shade. The shade has a fracture/streamer background glass which gives the piece a light, airy look. The leaves are a combination of rich amber, yellow, orange and green tones. Both the shade and base are currently available for purchase from our showroom.

Another base that we just completed is this Arrowhead Mosaic base for a client in New York. The generously proportioned base has hand inset gold lustre glass mosaic between the distinctively shaped cast bronze Arrowhead leaves. This base will work with any 16" shade.

Lamp of the Week: 20" Black Eyed Susan

Created as a showroom piece in 2002, the 20" Black Eyed Susan shade is covered in flowers at the height of their summer bloom. The orange flowers are set against a subtle backdrop of a semi-transparent light amber glass tinged with lavender and yellow. Bookmarking the flowers at the top and bottom of the shade are multiple border rows in an off-white linen tone that is mixed with green and pale amber. The shade is shown on the organic Twisted Vine base (24.5" tall) and is in a local collection.

16" Geranium

This 16" Geranium lamp was commissioned by a client in California. The lightly textured red geranium flowers are set against a background of blue mottled glass. Red are gently mixed into the green leaves to insinuate the flower color throughout the body of the shade. The light tones in the rippled borders uplift the colors of the shade, keeping the lamp bright and cheerful. The shade is paired with the Bump base (23" tall). Four cast feet support the distinctive platform from which the study stem rises upwards into the shade.
