10" Azalea

The 10" Azalea is a small shade with a large personality. The design is segmented into sections by horizontal and vertical border rows. The borders can barely contain the exuberant foliage and flowers that fill the shade. Commissioned by a client in England, the flowers for this shade are a lusty deep red while the leaves have a variety of mixed green tones. Blue sky peeks through the plant life while the grey/blue borders add a unifying tone to the shade. The shade is shown on the Ruffle base (17" total lamp height).

Lamp of the Week: 22" Dragonfly

The endless variety of color combinations available for the 22" Dragonfly shade make each example an exciting challenge to create. The deep blue and green background glass for this generously proportioned shade was made by the Lins Glass Foundry in the mid 1990's. A mix of sparkling blue and green pressed glass jewels studs the surface of the shade. This shade was commissioned by a California client in 2017. The shade is shown on the Perforated base (this base is currently not available).

20" Daffodil

One of Tiffany Studio's more popular floral shade designs is the 20" Daffodil. This is one of the only shade patterns where the flowers are inverted, rather than "growing" from the bottom of the shade. There is an original Tiffany Studios' black and white photograph in the collection of the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum which shows a bunch of Daffodils that have been gathered at their base and draped over a lamp form. This photo was presumably used for reference by Clara Driscoll during the design process of this shade. Because the flowers are clustered at the lower edge of the shade, the 20" Daffodil makes a wonderful chandelier fixture.

Commissioned by a client in Massachusetts, this colorful 20" Daffodil shade has flowers that range from light buttery yellow to rich amber. The mixed greens of the long leaves are echoed in the border rows. For the background pieces, a sparkling cerulean blue mixed with yellow imparts a lively touch to the shade. The shade is shown on the Grooved base (26" tall).

Lamp of the Week: 16" Peacock

The 16" Peacock shade is comprised of a whirlwind of overlapping peacock feathers. The royal purple at the top of the shade blends into vivid blues, finally mixing with green as the peacock feathers swirl across the surface. The eye of each feather is highlighted with deep orange. The lively combination of pattern and color give completed shade an exuberant feel.

This lamp was commissioned by a couple in Illinois in 2016 and is paired with the Bell Pepper base (10.5" height to the armset).

25" Salamander

Century Studios is pleased to introduce a new shade to our offerings, the 25" Salamander. This generously proportioned shade has a distinct personality all its own. Taking inspiration from the legend that salamanders are born from fire, this shade is covered in flames within the decorative borders and flaring from the amphibians themselves.

The design of the shade has a Moorish influence, with the upper third of the lamp containing multiple border rows with repetitive shapes. A wide band with vignettes of salamanders decorates the main body of the shade. The repetitive nature of this design requires strict attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship to fit the pieces precisely.

The deep midnight blue of the background provides a striking contrast to the red, orange, and yellows used throughout the shade. Once the pieces have been cut, fit, and foiled, the soldering can begin. Large shades like this one are reinforced on the interior of the shade with copper wires soldered in place along the lead lines on the interior of the shade.

The completed shade, with its bold coloration and detailed piecework has a striking presence. The Tall Artichoke Trumpet base (28" tall) mimics the flare of the shade. This lamp was commissioned by a client in Canada.

Lamp of the Week: 20" Russian

The 20" Russian is one of Tiffany Studios "busy" shades. The design departs from Tiffany's signature true to life floral motifs, presenting a fretwork grill inset with round and arched openings. Viewed through the yellow/amber fretwork is an orange/amber sky splashed with lavender. This shade was made entirely from Lins glass. Shown on the Twisted Vine base (24.5" tall), the shade was created in 2004 and resides in a local collection.

15" Spider

We recently completed a 15" Spider shade for a California client. The rich velvety red glass is tinged with blue blended in towards the apex of the shade. The cast bronze spider straddles the shade, protecting its web with its long legs.
