20" Waterlily Part 1

We hit the ground running this January with several lamps being worked on concurrently alongside preparing waxes for lamp bases that were taken to the foundry last week. While Irwin Terry was engaged in soldering a shade, Bill Campbell worked on the layout for a 20" Waterlily being created for a client in Indiana.

Bill is pictured foiling one section of the waterlily shade.

Lamp of the Week: 12" Acorn

Small accent lamps like this 12" Acorn on the Tobacco Leaf base (15" tall) add a splash of color and interest to any interior. This shade design was original called a Vine Border by Tiffany Studios, but today it is commonly referred to as an Acorn. The gentle shift in color from white at the top down to amber gives this shade a warm glow. Created in 2017, this is one of a pair of lamps commissioned by a client in Portland, Oregon.

20" Daffodil Turban

The 20" Daffodil Turban is one of the many Tiffany Studios lamp shade designs that feature Louis C. Tiffany's favorite flower. The turban shape of the shade and the multiple horizontal borders give the impression that the flowers are bursting forth with springtime vigor.

Created in vibrant tones for a client in Michigan, the shade has lush green leaves and rich yellow and amber flowers that play against the bold blue background. In the photo above, Bill Campbell has completed the layout and the colors are given a final check before being transferred onto the form for soldering.

Irwin Terry is shown completing the soldering on the interior of the shade.
When viewed from above, the flowers are shown to encircle the shade in an undulating garland formation. The shade is mated with the Twisted Vine table base (25.5" tall).

Lamp of the Week: 16" Daisy

The 16" Daisy is a Century Studios adaptation of a Tiffany Studios shade design. The shade pattern is actually the 16" Black Eyed Susan but the flower colors have been changed from amber to white. While this variation is a Century Studios' idea, it was not unheard of for Tiffany Studios to change colors on an existing shade pattern to create a new design. One such example is the 22" Laburnum (when created in golden tones), and the 22" Wisteria (when created in blue tones).

The shade has a semitransparent summertime blue background with delicate white flowers and is shown on the elegant Greek Urn base. This piece was created in 2012 is in a private East Coast collection.

16" Dragonfly

The 16" Dragonfly is a cornerstone Tiffany Studios shade design. Instantly recognizable with its jeweled eyes and filigreed wings, this pattern can be created in any coloration. For this example bold blues and purples are accented by green upper and lower border rows. The shade is mated with the Swamp Flower base (18" tall). Completed in December, this lamp is in a private collection in Indiana.

Lamp of the Week: 16" Fish

The 16" Fish is an unusual Tiffany shade design. With the notable exception of the dragonfly shades, very few Tiffany designs feature wildlife motifs. Five Koi swim gracefully across the surface of the shade in a rhythmic pattern. Filigree overlays accentuate the fins on each fish. This striking shade was created using a lightly textured water glass and heavily rippled glass for the lower edge. Hints of orange, amber, and blue appear in the predominantly green background, while the deep orange fish are tinged with green and yellow. Commissioned by a South Dakota client in 2016, the shade is shown on the Shell Urn base.

10" Turtleback

The holidays are always a busy time at Century Studios, and this past December was no exception. We completed several lamp projects, including this 10" Turtleback shade. For this richly toned amber colored shade, a row of hand cut turtleback tiles is bookmarked by heavily mottled glass. Commissioned by a client in Maryland, the shade is shown on the petite Ruffle base (overall lamp height 17").

Lamp of the Week: 18" Peacock Lamp

With their distinctively colorful plumage, Peacocks were often featured in Tiffany Studios windows, mosaics, and lamps. The 18" Peacock is an elaborate shade design consisting of overlapping peacock tail feathers swirling across the surface of the shade. Tiffany Studios designed the Peacock base specifically for this shade. The shape of the base swells at the top, mimicking the bird's feathered breast. The lower portion of the base is decorated with more tail feathers, each of which has a stained glass eye at its center.

Three different styles of rippled glass were used to create this piece. The finished shade has a sparkling surface with a lot of visual and tactile interest. Deep emerald green blends with yellow and blue to subtly define the feathers. The shade's horizontal border colors play off the colors of the eyes.

We created this 18" Peacock lamp (29.5" tall) as a showroom piece in 2018 and it is now in a private local collection.
