18" Turtleback Turban

At Century Studios we create geometric and turtleback shades in many sizes and shapes. We were commissioned by a client in Illinois to create this 18" Turtleback Turban shade. A sparkling band of hand cut and faceted green turtleback tiles bisects the boldly colored, heavily mottled, red and green glass that makes up body of the shade. The shade is shown on the Mock Turtle base (22.5" tall).

Lamp of the Week: 16" Daisy

The 16" Daisy Shade is a Century Studios hybrid of a Tiffany Studios shade design. The shade pattern is actually the 16" Black Eyed Susan, but for years Bill had been speculating that the pattern would look wonderful in daisy colors. In 2012 we decided to put theory into practice.

While this variation is a Century Studios' idea, it was not unheard of for Tiffany Studios to change colors on an existing shade pattern to create a new design. One such example is the 22" Laburnum (when created in golden tones), and the 22" Wisteria (when created in blue tones).

The shade has a semitransparent summertime blue background with delicate white flowers and is shown on the Greek Urn base. This piece was commissioned in 2012 is in a private East Coast collection.

A Busy Week At Century Studios

It was another busy week at Century Studios, with several projects coming to completion and multiple projects progressing several paces forward. Bill Campbell finished the layout and cutting for an 18" Clematis shade which is now being foiled.

Irwin Terry completed the soldering on an 18" Turtleback Turban shade (we will show the completed lamp next week) and moved right into our next big lamp project, the layout for colorful a 22" Elaborate Peony.

We also completed a Mandarin Lotus lamp base for a local client. Our projects are lined up well into 2022, so the coming weeks and months will be just as excitingly busy.

Lamp of the Week: 16" Apple Blossom

The 16" Apple Blossom is an elegant design with a strong Asian influence. Tree branches move diagonally across the shade bearing leaves and flowers. The dramatically blended amber & green glass chosen for the body of the shade provides a lush backdrop for the delicate pink-tinged flower petals. The shade is shown on the Small Stick base (20" tall). This shade was made as a showroom piece in 2018 and is now in a private collection.

18" Geometric Turban

Geometric lamps can be created in a seemingly endless variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Our client in New York City requested a deep honey colored amber tone for this 18" Geometric Turban shade which gives the piece a warm glow. The shade is mated with the elegant Library base (22.5" tall).

Lamp of the Week: 10" Pony Wisteria

Tiffany Studios created Wisteria lamps in several sizes and shapes, starting with the 10" Pony Wisteria. The shade begins at the top with a cast bronze crown from which the flowers cascade downwards intermingling with leaves and branch work. The undulating lower border give a lifelike approximation of the wisteria's long flower clusters hanging from the woody stems. Bold blues and greens with subtle white and lavender tones were blended to create a rich color pallet. This gnarled Pony Tree Trunk base (16" tall) was designed by Tiffany Studios specifically for this shade. This lamp was created in 2012 and is now in a private collection

22" Dogwood, Part 2

We have completed the 22" Dogwood shade. This generously proportioned shade is alive with color. The shade is shown on the Large Bamboo Table base (27" tall). This shade was created as a piece for our studio showroom and is now in a private Midwest collection.

Approaching the layout of the lamp, Irwin began without a set color scheme in mind and let the glass dictate the tone as the piece progressed. The carefully modulated use of color was achieved by digging deep into our glass library. Beginning with the background, a multicolored piece of glass was chosen that combined blue, deep orange amber, and light amber yellow. Off tones of white and pink were selected for the main flower colors, with hits of green and blue added for richness. Shots of brilliant emerald green in the leaves enliven the shade.

One of the main design elements of the 22" Dogwood is its many horizontal border rows. To compliment the flower colors, an unusual tone of blue was chosen for most of the rows while a bright blue mixed with purple was added for a pop of color. The bottom border provides an underline to the pattern, while two wide rows bisect the wide band of flowers just below curve of the shade. Flowers spill over these two rows, partially hiding the borders. At the top of the shade eight rows form a mosaic collar. These rows cap the design but are open to interpretation for color choices.

The shade is shown on the highly detailed Large Bamboo table base. This shade could also be used as a chandelier fixture or with a Jr. Floor base.

Lamp of the Week: 36" Pond Lily

The 36" Pond Lily Chandelier is the largest reproduction Tiffany Studios shade design we create at our studio. With its generous size and strong horizontal lines, this shade transports the viewer to the edge of a quiet pond in summer. Water lilies in varying shades of white, pink, and yellow dot the sparkling blue surface of this unusually shaped shade. The water glass is a mix of mottled, streaky and gently rippled glasses. Tiffany Studios designed this lamp to be a large chandelier fixture. We made this shade as a showroom piece in 2015 and it is now installed as a hanging fixture, suspended over an oversized kitchen island in the lakeside home of a local client.
