Lamp of the Week: 28" Grape Trellis

The 28" Grape Trellis was originally designed by Tiffany Studios as a chandelier fixture, but the shade can also be used as a floor lamp or oversized table lamp. Tiffany's large chandelier cones present the lamp artist with a an exciting opportunity to showcase the beauty of stained glass in ways not possible on smaller shades. The intricate patterns and expanded surface area allows for more variety within the shade. As is the case with may of the large chandelier cones, the 28" Grape Trellis has a non-repeating pattern.

The 28" Grape Trellis pattern is defined by the trellis itself, which provides a visual structure for the leaves and large clusters of fully mature fruit to realistically intertwine across the surface of the shade.  The color of the trellis informs and tones every aspect of the piece since it appears throughout the entire shade. The background areas were cut from a number of different glasses that sometimes blend, and often provide contrast to the surrounding elements.
For the fruit and foliage we chose glasses with a wide variety of textures, colors, and transparencies. The grapes are a mix of lush blues, deep purples, and reds tinged with blue and green. Ring mottled glass imparts a sun dappled effect to the leaves and provides shading on the grapes. One of the features of this shade is the large leaf that is cut from drapery glass. The pleated folds of the drapery glass add a realistic element to the shade.
The completed shade is a visual delight that blends together glasses from all the major glass makers of the past 30 years. The overall tone of the piece is lush and bursting with life. This exciting chandelier is currently on display and available for purchase from our studio showroom.

Lamp of the Week: 15" Spider

The 15" Spider is a lamp that can be made in any color. This example uses a glass that combines a vivid emerald green with yellow green.

One of the most striking features of this design is the three dimensional spider that sits atop the shade with its legs extending down over the glass web. We make the cast bronze spider crown at our studio using molds taken from an original Tiffany example. The vent cap represents the body of the spider.

Even though the 15" Spider shade can be used with a number of different bases, Tiffany Studios almost always mated this shade with the highly detailed Mushroom base (16" tall). We created this piece in 2010 and it is in a private collection.

16" Fish

We recently completed this 16" Fish shade for a client in New Jersey. Five Koi fish gently wrap around the shade amongst water plants in a rhythmic dance. The fins of the fish are accentuated with metal filigree overlays. The color palette for this shade is a gentle mix of yellow/amber, orange, and green.

We offer 25 different bases for 16" shades, and our client commissioned the impressive Bell Pepper lamp base to go with his shade. Since we have one made up in the showroom, we also shot a photo of the completed shade on the Arrowhead Mosaic base.

Lamp of the Week: 28" Trumpet Vine

The 28" Trumpet Vine is a large shade that is usually hung as a chandelier fixture, but can also be used as a floor or table lamp. Commissioned in 2012 by a client in Chicago, this shade employs many types of glass to create an explosion of color and texture. Ring mottled, streaky, fracture, and ripple glasses are combined to make the shade exciting to view from every angle. The glass used for the background of the shade is made from three different fracture/streamer glasses created at our studio, and the color shifts from deep purple to several lighter blue/purple mixes. The decorative beaded border at the bottom of the lamp adds a whimsical touch to the piece.

16" Pansy

Pansies are one of the most colorful of cultivated garden flowers and being cold resistant, are one of the first flowers to be planted in gardens and outdoor planters in the early spring.

The multicolored flowers are loosely gathered into four bundles, or bouquets on the shade. Our client requested a vibrant mix of colors and the joyful flowers are set against a background that shifts from teal to blue. The shade is shown on the elegant Decorated Trumpet base (22" tall). This lamp was commissioned by a client in California.

Lamp of the Week: 22" Bamboo

We created this 22" Bamboo shade in 2006 and it is in a private collection. The background glass is a warm semitransparent amber glass and the leaves are a fresh green mixed with hints of yellow. The shade is shown on the Large Bamboo table base.

Bamboo shades are unique amongst Tiffany Studios' lamp patterns because each leaf is heated in a kiln and slumped to conform to the curvature of the shade. By eliminating the horizontal lines that are usually needed to fit long pieces of glass to the curve of a lamp form, the plants depicted on the shade have a realistic look. The combination of shade and base are perfectly mated to create a lit sculpture.

14" Acorn

Acorn shades come in many sizes and can be made in any color. Commissioned by a client in Kansas, this 14" Acorn shade is a pleasing mix of green and amber tones, with yellow acorns giving an extra pop of color to decorative band. The shade is perfectly mated with the Tobacco Leaf base (15" tall).

Lamp of the Week: 16" Vine Ornament

With its wide band of swirling leaves, the 16" Vine Ornament shade is a a nice transition between a floral and geometric style of shade. The unusual mottled glass chosen for this shade are a mix of amber and peach tones, creating a warm, welcoming lamp. The shade is shown on the versatile Short Flower Petal w/Arms base (18" total lamp height). This lamp was created in 2002 as a showroom piece and is now in a private collection.
