16" Bamboo, Part 1

We have been working on the layout for a 16" Bamboo shade. Bamboo shades are unique amongst Tiffany Studios' lamp patterns because each long leaf is heated in a kiln and slumped to conform to the curvature of the shade. By eliminating the horizontal lines that are usually needed to fit long pieces of glass to the curve of a lamp form, the plants depicted on the shade have a realistic look.

A mold is made to match the curvature of the shade and each long leaf is heated until it gently slumps to the shape of the mold.

Once all the leaves have been slumped, we are ready to foil the shade. Wrapping the copper foil on the edges of the curved pieces takes extra patience. We will show the completed lamp in an upcoming post.

Lamp of the Week: 20" Waterlily

Evoking tranquil ponds and summer heat, the 20" Waterlily is one of Tiffany Studios' most popular lamp patterns. The richly colored pink and fuchsia colored flowers gently float amongst lush green lily pads on the teal toned water. The shade is shown on the impressive Cattail base. This lamp was created in 2022 and is in a private local collection.

14" Dragofly

The 14" Dragonfly is one of our most popular lamp patterns. This compact shade showcases six filigreed dragonflies surrounded by pressed glass jewels. The glass chosen for the body of the shade is a lively blue/green mix giving the impression that the colorful insects are hovering over a dazzling pond. The shade is shown on the square Chinese base (16" tall) and has been acquired by a local client.

Lamp of the Week: 20" Lilypad

Water plants are one of the major design themes for Tiffany Studios lamps. The 20" Lily Pad is unusual in that it depicts the surface of a pond that is completely covered with lily pads but there are no flowers present. It is also one of only a few Tiffany shade designs rendered in deep perspective, giving the piece a layered horizontal orientation that is is calm and tranquil. Shown on the striking Twisted Vine w/Arms and Rim (18" tall to the shade support rim), this lamp was created in 2021 and is now in a local private collection.

Lamp of the Week - 20" Arrowhead & Studio Hours

Studio Hours: Century Studios will be closed Saturday July 13th.

The pattern of the 20" Arrowhead has a distinct Arts and Crafts sensibility. This design has a fairly unique Tiffany Studios approach - representational, yet stylized and rhythmic in its execution. Arrowhead plants can be found near ponds and streams, and the distinctive shape of the foliage is used stylistically to great effect. A sunset orange sky sets the color tone for this shade and warm tones were chosen for each elements throughout the shade. Shown on the sculptural Cattail base, this shade was commissioned by a client in Texas in 2011.

22" Laburnum

The 22" Laburnum has been completed. This complex shade has 1988 individual pieces of glass. The laburnum tree will grow to a height of 15 - 25 feet. The pendulous yellow flower clusters have inspired the nickname of "golden chain tree".

This 22" shade is quite versatile and can be used as a table lamp, chandelier or floor lamp. It is shown here on the Lion's Foot base (28" height, can be telescoped taller).

An overhead view shows the lobed shape of the shade. The modified dome lends a naturalistic look to the piece and the shape of the shade changes when viewed from different angles. The irregular lower edge accentuates the three dimensional look of this piece.

Bill Campbell painstakingly modulated the color tones of the glass to subtly accentuate the lobed shape of the shade. The color of the heavily mottled golden flowers deepens in the recesses and brightens on the lobes. Fresh green leaves intermingle with the golden flowers. The background (or sky) seen between the flower clusters is an unusual green/amber fracture streamer glass that gives depth to the tone of the shade.

Our client in Virginia will be using the shade with the Smooth Jr. Floor base (60" height). The Pigtail Cap finial lends a touch of whimsy to the lamp.
