Lamp of the Week: 30" Lotus Blossom Chandelier

Blooming water plants were a favorite design inspiration for Louis Comfort Tiffany. Arrowhead, waterlily, lily pad, and lotus flowers appear in windows, as decorative elements on numerous items, and in many lamps created by Tiffany Studios. The 30" Lotus Blossom Chandelier is one of the most spectacular stained glass chandelier fixtures created by Tiffany Studios.
The shade consists almost entirely of large flowers and leaves supported by a fringe of stems at the top of the shade. The commanding size of this fixture calls for bold color choices. The fuchsia pink, red orange, and peach flowers play against a variety of green mixes in the leaves. Semitransparent fracture/streamer glass at the top of the shade lightens the overall feel, leading to the ornate fixture.
The six chain fixture and irregular lower border give the piece a commanding presence. We created this fixture in 2011 as a showroom piece and it is now in a private local collection.

14" Arrowhead

The 14" Arrowhead is a compact shade that works well as an accent or bedside table lamp. Because of its stylized look, at first glance this Tiffany Studios design appears to be an abstract interpretation of natural subject when in fact it is a factual representation of a flowering water plant. Due to the distinctive shape of its leaves, the Arrowhead plant was a favorite motif of Arts & Crafts era designers and has become commonly known as "Arrowroot", a completely different species of plant that bears no physical resemblance to the plant depicted on the shade. Nurseries and plant growers have created disease resistant house plan varieties of the Arrowhead, and natural specimens are often seen around ponds on golf courses.
The lightly mottled green glass chosen for the leaves is gently streaked with amber yellow. The blue toned sky plays against the hints of red mixed with green in the lower background. Green upper and lower border rows tie all of the colors together, while the white flowers with bright yellow centers give the shade a pop of color.
The shade is shown on the Zodiac base (total lamp height 17"). This lamp was commissioned by a local client.

Lamp of the Week: 24" Poppy

The 24" Poppy is a generously proportioned shade with an irregular lower border. Set against a geometric framework, poppy flowers and buds dance across the surface of the shade. Filigree is used throughout the shade to accentuate the flower centers and the leaves that make up the lower border. The sparkling, lightly textured background glass blends together the flower and leaf colors. We created this shade in 2013 as a showroom piece, and it is now in a private collection.

18" Oak Leaf

The 18" Oak Leaf is a formal looking shade with a playful side. The wildly swirling oak leaves and acorns are contained within the wide decorative band that is bookmarked by upper and lower sections of geometric tiles. The glass for the majority of the shade is a medium toned, mottled golden amber. Light green glass subtly mixed with amber was chosen for the leaves. Each acorn is a single piece of glass, so a brown glass with pronounced mottling was chosen in order to accentuate the cap of each nut. The shade is shown on the Library base (22.5" tall). This lamp was commissioned by a client in Iowa.

Lamp of the Week: 20" Black Eyed Susan

The 20" Black Eyed Susan shade is a generously proportioned dome shaped shade that is covered in flowers. The orange/amber flowers are set against a subtle backdrop of a semi-transparent light amber glass tinged with lavender and yellow. Horizontal border rows in an off-white linen tone mixed with green and pale amber appear at the top and bottom of the shade. This shade is shown on the organic Twisted Vine base (24.5" tall). The lamp was created in 2002 and is in a private collection.

Lamp of the Week: 22" Peony

The 22" Peony remains one of the most popular shade designs created by Tiffany Studios. For this example the flowers begin with a lightly textured fuchsia at the top, blending into striated reds and lush purples for the lower blooms. The flower colors are enhanced by a shifting background that includes mottled, streaky, and fracture glass in mixed tones of deep blue and green highlighted with amber, purple, red, and fuchsia. The intensely rippled deep green border rows underscore the colors and textures found throughout the shade. This shade was commissioned by a client in the Chicago area in 2018 and is shown on the Twisted Vine base (24.5" tall).

28" Magnolia, Part 4

Soldering the interior of the 28" Magnolia shade included adding six copper reinforcing wires to the inside of the shade. The wires are permanently soldered in place following the lead lines in a path that goes from the top of the shade to the bottom. Once we finished soldering the entire interior of the shade, the bottom rim was added and the shade was prepared for its final cleaning and patina.
The completed shade has a lush color pallet that is full of surprises.
The Impressionist color theme was created by painstakingly blending streaky, ring mottled, rippled, and heavily textured drapery glasses. Set against a clear blue sky that shifts from brilliant to pale blue, the flowers are a mix of white, purple, pink and amber tones.
This impressive shade was commissioned by a client in New York.

Lamp of the Week: 16" Poppy

The 16" Poppy is one of Tiffany Studios most popular lamp designs. The straightforward design has a sophisticated simplicity that is pleasing and appealing. The addition of pierced metal filigree on the flower centers and leaves gives the shade an added a layer of visual interest. For this shade we chose a sunny amber yellow background with hints of green. The teal border rows ad a pop of color below the green leaves and burnt orange/yellow flowers. This shade was created as a showroom piece in 2013 and is now in a private collection. The shade is shown on the versatile Small Stick base (20" tall).
