18" Peony

One of Tiffany Studios most successful and popular shade patterns is the 18" Peony. The turban shaped shade is covered in large blooms and is a perfect canvas for the glass artist to showcase exceptional glass.

For this shade, Irwin Terry chose an assortment of soft pink, green and light amber glasses, mixing them together in an Impressionist-style color scheme. Digging deep into our library of glass, the flowers feature glass made by the Lins and Schlitz glass foundries, both of which ended production in the 1990's.

Shown on the Mock Turtle base (21.5" tall), this shade has been sold and is now in a private collection on the West Coast.

 

14" Tulip

With their large petals and endless variety of colors, tulips were a favorite flower to be featured on lamps by Tiffany Studios. The 14" Tulip is a sweet pattern with a lot of movement.

To accentuate the movement in the design, Bill Campbell chose red and white rippled glass for the flowers set against a lightly textured grey/blue background. The background glass was made by the Lins Glass Foundry in the 1990's. The lively green leaves add springtime freshness to the shade.

The shade was mated with the Chinese base (16" tall). This lamp has been sold and is now in a private collection in Seattle.
 

18" Grape

The 18" Grape is one of four 18" tree style shade designs by Tiffany Studios which were designed to mate with the large Tree Trunk base. Starting with a cast bronze crown of openwork branches at the top of the shade, these lamp designs fully integrate the shade with the base.

Hand rolled glasses by Youghiogheny, Schlitz, Lins, and Uroborus in tones of blue, purple and green were blended in a lush color palette to give the shade depth. Hints of red, orange and deep amber enliven the color scheme. A brilliant blue sky composed of fracture/streamer glass made over thirty years ago by Schlitz Studios peeps between the foliage and ripening fruit.

The color, texture and transparency of each of the glasses used were all carefully considered when laying out the shade. This lamp was created for a local client.
 

Lamp of the Week: Easter Lily

The 28" Easter Lily is a Century Studios original shade design which was created by Bill Campbell in 2016. To bring this highly detailed pattern to life every type of art glass was employed, including streaky, ring mottle, rippled, fibroid, drapery, and fracture/streamer. The glasses were painstakingly chosen and the colors blended to create an impressionistic view of a garden of lilies in full bloom. This stunning shade was created for a client in Illinois and is in their private collection.

 

22" Dogwood

Spring is the time when the first flowers appear in the garden and flowering petals adorn the trees overhead. Dogwood trees were a favorite subject for Tiffany Studios' lamp and window designers. The 22" Dogwood is a generously proportioned shade with large flowers in full bloom covering the shade. The pink and white blooms and fresh green foliage are held in check by a series of horizontal border rows. 

Shown on the Bird Skeleton base (26.5" tall), this shade was created for a client in Georgia who is using it as a floor lamp on a Twisted Vine Floor base (57.5" tall).  

Here is a peek at how we photograph our completed lamps. Our collapsible photo booth is set up on the lower level of the studio and after the lamp is photographed, we fold the booth up until it is time to shoot the next project.

18" Grape, continued

Work continues to progress on the 18" Grape lamp. The shade is composed on the light table. Colors and textures are carefully considered and artfully blended to add depth to the shade.

The 18" Grape shade has five repeated sections. After Irwin Terry completed the layout for the shade, we began to foil the pieces.

The shade begins at the top with a crown of openwork branches. We create the bronze castings using a mold that was taken off an original Tiffany Studios example.

Once the foiling was completed, Irwin began transferring the pieces onto the waxed lamp form in anticipation of soldering the shade. The crown of branches will be positioned in place on the top of the form.

 

Several Projects

We are currently working on two large shade projects for clients. The first is a 22" Dogwood shade for which Bill Campbell did the glass selection. The shade will be lighter in tone with pink and white dogwood flowers.

After completing the layout, Bill has been foiling the pieces.

The large shade form is covered in our house made sticky beeswax. The foiled pieces will be held in place by the wax in preparation for soldering.

Once the cutting and fitting of the dogwood pieces was complete and Bill began the foiling, Irwin Terry moved on to begin the glass selection for our next project, an 18" Grape. The 18" Grape is a Wisteria-style lamp.

Starting with the lush grape leaves, Irwin is composing a shade that will have a saturated color palette. As Bill completes the foiling and transfer of the dogwood lamp pieces onto the form, Irwin will be finishing the layout of the grape and will move to soldering the 22" shade.
